AI for Small Business Owners in South Africa: What's Actually Useful

Skip the hype. Six jobs AI genuinely does well for a small shop today, the ones to keep doing yourself, and how to connect Claude or ChatGPT to your shop safely.

AI won't run your business. But it is very good at a handful of jobs that eat a small business owner's evenings. Here's where it earns its keep, and where it doesn't.

Six jobs AI does well today

1. Writing product descriptions

Give it a photo or three bullet points and it writes a description, a search title and a short line for social. Always read it before you publish: AI is confident even when it's wrong about a material or a size.

2. Better product photos

AI can put your product on a clean background, light it properly, or show it in a setting. For a shop without a photographer, this is the biggest jump in how professional you look.

3. Answering "how do I…?" about your own tools

Instead of hunting through settings, ask. In ShopEazy, Ask ShopEazy answers questions about your shop and the console, and it's free: it doesn't use your credits.

4. Reading your numbers

"What sold best last month?" "Which products are running low?" Asking in plain words beats building a report, as long as the AI can see your real data.

5. Drafting the boring messages

Replies to reviews, a WhatsApp message for your regulars, an email about a sale. AI gives you a draft in seconds; you add the human bit.

6. Translating

South Africa has 12 official languages. A product page in isiZulu or Afrikaans as well as English reaches people your competitors ignore. Have a first-language speaker check anything important.

Jobs to keep doing yourself

  • Pricing. AI doesn't know your costs, your rent or your customers. See How to price your products in rand.
  • Refunds and money decisions. Keep a human in charge of anything that moves money.
  • Your story. Customers buy from small shops because of the person behind them. Write your About page in your own voice.

Connect your own AI to your shop

If you already pay for Claude or ChatGPT, you can connect it to your ShopEazy shop. It can then look things up and, if you allow it, make changes for you: "add these five products", "which orders haven't shipped?", "draft a discount for Heritage Day".

You choose what it can do. The presets are Just look, Day-to-day and Everything, and anything that moves money (refunds, paying for your plan, spending credits, booking couriers) starts off. You can change or disconnect it any time.

  • Claude: works on every Claude plan. Free allows one connector.
  • ChatGPT: custom connectors need a Business, Enterprise or Edu plan, added by the workspace admin. Free and Plus can't connect yet.

How to: Connect Claude and Connect ChatGPT. More on the AI page.

Keep it safe

  • Only connect AI tools you trust, and only give them the access the job needs.
  • Don't paste customer details into a general chat. A connected tool reads them from your shop under the rules you set; copying them around is how data leaks.
  • Check before it goes out. AI drafts, you approve.

Start small

Pick the one job you most hate (usually product descriptions) and let AI do the first draft for a week. If it saves you time, add the next one.
