Capitec Pay for Online Shops: What It Is and How to Offer It

Capitec has more than 26 million personal banking clients. Capitec Pay lets them pay your shop from their banking app, with no card. Here's how it works and how to switch it on.

5 min read

Capitec is South Africa's biggest bank by number of clients. Its personal banking client base passed 26 million in 2026. Many of those people don't have a credit card, or don't like typing card numbers into websites.

Capitec Pay lets them pay you anyway.

How Capitec Pay works for the shopper

  1. At checkout, they choose Capitec Pay.
  2. They enter their cellphone number or ID number.
  3. A payment request pops up in their Capitec app.
  4. They approve it in the app.
  5. Your shop gets confirmation straight away, and so do they.

No card number, no OTP to copy, no leaving their phone. Under the hood it's a bank-to-bank payment that the shopper approves inside the app they already trust.

Why it matters for a small shop

  • More people can pay you. A shopper without a card isn't a lost sale.
  • Fewer abandoned carts. Approving in an app you use every day feels safer than entering card details on a site you've never seen.
  • You know straight away. Unlike a manual bank transfer, you don't have to watch your bank statement and mark the order paid.

Capitec Pay vs a normal EFT

A normal EFT (bank transfer) means the customer copies your bank details into their banking app, pays, and you check your statement before sending the order. It works and it's free to offer, but it's slow and easy to get wrong.

Capitec Pay is confirmed automatically, like a card payment. The trade-off: it comes through a payment provider, who charges a fee for it. Check their pricing page.

How to offer Capitec Pay

You don't sign up with Capitec. You get Capitec Pay through a payment provider that offers it. Four of the providers you can connect to ShopEazy do:

Connect one of them to your shop, then make sure Capitec Pay is switched on in your account with that provider. Which methods shoppers see depends on what's switched on there.

Step by step: Connect a payment provider.

Should you offer it?

If you sell to South Africans broadly, yes. Capitec's client base is so large that plenty of your shoppers will look for it at checkout. If you mostly sell to tourists or corporate buyers, cards will cover most of your sales, and Capitec Pay is a nice extra.
