Prices, currency and VAT
How ShopEazy handles prices: everything is in rand, prices always include VAT, and adding your VAT number is what turns VAT reporting on for your stores.
Every ShopEazy store sells in South African rand (ZAR). There's no currency to choose, so the settings that matter are how you enter prices and whether your business charges VAT.
Prices are in rand
- You enter every price in rand. The price boxes in the console show an R in front.
- Customers see prices like R199.99 on your storefront, in their cart, at checkout and in their order emails.
- Your standard policy pages say that all prices are in South African Rand (ZAR) and include VAT at 15% where it applies.
You can't sell in another currency or show converted prices.
Prices always include VAT
The price you type is the price the customer pays. ShopEazy never adds VAT on top at checkout. If your business is VAT registered, ShopEazy works out the VAT already inside your prices at 15%.
For example, a product priced at R115 costs the customer R115 either way. If you're VAT registered, R15 of that is recorded as VAT.
Tell ShopEazy you're VAT registered
ShopEazy treats your business as VAT registered once you add your VAT number. It isn't a separate switch.
- Open the menu under your name and choose Business.
- Click Business details.
- Under Identity, type your VAT number.
- Click Save changes.
This applies to every store in your business. To stop charging VAT, clear the VAT number box and save again.
Only the owner or an admin can change business details.
What changes when you're VAT registered
- Product pages show VAT included under the price, for products that charge VAT.
- The cart and checkout show VAT included.
- Each order records how much VAT it contains. Delivery counts as taxable, and discounts come off before the VAT is worked out.
- When you create an order yourself, the total shows how much VAT it includes.
- Insights → Reports adds a VAT column.
If you're not VAT registered
No VAT is worked out on your orders, and your product pages, cart and checkout don't show a VAT line. Insights → Reports says "Your store isn’t VAT registered, so there’s no VAT to report."
Not sure whether you should be registered? Ask your accountant. ShopEazy can't advise on that.
Choose which products charge VAT
Every product has a Charge VAT on this product switch under Pricing. Services, event tickets and tours have a similar switch (on tours it's called VAT applies).
- Leave it on for normal standard-rated items.
- Turn it off for anything that shouldn't carry VAT. That item's price is then left out when VAT is worked out.
New products start with the switch on if your business has a VAT number, and off if it doesn't. The switch only affects VAT once your business is VAT registered.
Check that it worked
- Open a product that charges VAT on your storefront. If you're registered, you'll see VAT included under the price.
- Place a small test order and check the order total.
- Look at Insights → Reports for the VAT column.
If something goes wrong
I added my VAT number but my storefront doesn't say "VAT included". Check that the product's Charge VAT on this product switch is on, and that you clicked Save changes on Business details. If it still doesn't show, save Business details once more, which updates all your stores again.
I can't save my business details. You need to be the owner or an admin of the business.
I need to sell in dollars or euros. ShopEazy only supports rand at the moment.
