Sell at your counter with the till

Ring up walk-ins on an iPad or tablet: open the register, take cash, card or Scan to pay, print or WhatsApp the receipt, and keep selling with no signal.

schedule6 min read

The till rings up sales at your counter, market stall or pop-up. The stock, the money and the receipt land with your online orders, so one Money page shows everything. It's on every plan.

It works best on an iPad or tablet in landscape, but any browser works. Plug-in and Bluetooth barcode scanners just work, and receipts print to an 80 mm slip printer.

Open the till

  1. Click Till in the sidebar. It's also first under Apps, and on your dashboard's Today card.
  2. The till goes full screen. The sidebar folds away and comes back when you leave.
  3. Tap Open register and count your float into the drawer.

Opening the register is how the till knows what cash to expect when you close. Only one register is open at a time.

Ring up a sale

  1. Tap what they're buying, or scan its barcode. Events and tours need dates, seats and names, so sell those through New order instead.
  2. To sell something that isn't listed, key in an Amount.
  3. Tap a line to change its price or quantity. The listed price shows struck through, and the change is noted on the order.
  4. Tap Add discount to take rand or a percentage off the whole sale.
  5. Tap Charge and pick how they're paying.

If you're short on stock, the till offers Sell anyway: the item is already in their hand.

Take the payment

  • Cash: tap a quick note (Exact, or rounded up to R10, R20, R50, R100 or R200) or type what they gave you. The change shows straight away.
  • Card: they tap or swipe on your own card machine. You're recording a payment your machine took.
  • EFT, SnapScan, Zapper or Other: record it the same way.
  • Scan to pay: a QR goes up and the customer pays on their own phone, through the payment provider your online shop uses. Can't scan? Send the link on WhatsApp or copy it. Scan to pay needs a connected payment provider, not just EFT.
  • Split: take part in one way and the rest in another. The till holds each part until the last one covers the balance.

ShopEazy charges no fee on sales you take yourself (cash, card machine, EFT and the rest). Scan to pay goes through your online payment provider, so your plan's platform fee applies, like an online sale.

When they'll pay later

Closed the Scan to pay QR, or tapped Pay later? The sale isn't cancelled. They take the goods, the stock comes off now, and the sale waits under Waiting to be paid on the till and in Orders. From there you can Send the link again, mark that They paid another way, or Cancel sale. The link works for 7 days.

The receipt

After the sale, Print an 80 mm slip, send it on WhatsApp, or Email it. If you're VAT registered, the slip is a tax invoice with your VAT number. Every receipt says who served.

No signal? Keep selling

If the signal drops, cash, card machine, EFT, SnapScan, Zapper and Other sales are kept on the iPad, for up to 7 days, with their time and price. Receipts still print. When you're back online they send themselves.

Scan to pay and voiding a sale need signal. Keep the till open while you're offline: it can't load from scratch with no signal yet.

If a sale can't send for a lasting reason, it stays on the device under Offline sales that didn't send, with the reason, so you can try again, discard it or print it. It's never dropped without telling you.

Undo a sale

In the till menu, Void last sale refunds it in full and puts the stock back. It works for counter-paid sales from the last 24 hours. A Scan to pay sale is refunded from its order instead.

Close the register

  1. Tap Close register.
  2. Count the cash in the drawer and enter it under Cash counted.
  3. The till compares it with Cash expected (your float plus cash sales since you opened) and shows Balanced, Over or Short. Print the close-out slip if you want one.

Opening and closing the register show in your Activity log.

Sharing one iPad: cashier PINs

On Team, give each person a 4-digit till PIN (owners and admins can set anyone's; everyone can set their own). Once any PIN exists, the till opens on Who's selling?: pick your name and type your PIN. Use Switch to change cashier and Lock when you step away. Five wrong PINs lock that PIN for five minutes.

A PIN only says who's selling. It doesn't sign anyone into the rest of the console. Sales by person show in Reports, under By person.

How many people you can have depends on your plan: 1 on Starter, up to 5 on Growth, up to 50 on Scale.
