Create a discount code
Make a code customers type at checkout for money off or free delivery, with optional minimum spend, usage limits and start and end dates.
A discount code gives customers a percentage off, a rand amount off, or free delivery when they type it at checkout. A simple code takes two fields. The limits are there if you need them.
Create a code
- Click Store → Discounts in the sidebar.
- Click New code. If you haven't made one before, click Create your first code.
- In Code, type what customers will enter, for example
SUMMER20. Use 2 to 24 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores, with no spaces. Customers can type it in any case. - Under What it does, choose Percentage off, Rand off or Free delivery.
- For a percentage, enter it in Percentage (1 to 100). For a rand amount, enter it in Amount off. Free delivery needs no amount.
- Leave Live set to On if the code should work as soon as you save it.
- Set any limits you want (see below).
- Click Create code.
Your new code appears in the list on the Discounts page.
The three types
Percentage off
Takes the percentage off the basket. Delivery isn't discounted.
Rand off
Takes a fixed amount off the basket, for example R50. It never takes off more than the basket is worth, and delivery isn't discounted.
Free delivery
Sets the customer's delivery charge to R0. If you use a courier, you still pay the courier for that delivery.
Limits
Every limit is optional. Leave a box empty and there's no limit of that kind.
- Minimum spend: the basket has to reach this amount before the code works. Delivery doesn't count towards it.
- Total uses: how many times the code can be used across all customers. Once it runs out, the code stops working on its own.
- Uses per customer: how many times one customer can use it. This is matched on the email address they check out with.
- Runs from: a start date and an end date. The code starts at the beginning of the start date and works right to the end of the end date.
A use is counted when the order is placed. If you cancel an order that used a code, that use is given back.
How customers use a code
Codes work at checkout on your storefront.
- At checkout, the customer clicks Got a discount code?
- They type the code and click Apply.
- The code and what it takes off show in their order summary. They can remove it with the cross next to it.
Customers can use one code per order. ShopEazy checks the code again when the order is placed. If the last use was taken by someone else in the meantime, the order goes through at full price.
Codes don't apply to orders you create yourself in the console. For those, type the amount into the order's Discount (R) box instead.
Change, pause or delete a code
Click a code on the Discounts page to open it. The page shows how many times it's been used.
- To change it, edit the fields and click Save changes. If you rename it, its usage count carries over to the new name.
- To pause it, switch Live off and save. It stops working, and anyone who already used it keeps their discount.
- To delete it, click Delete, then Delete code. It stops working straight away. Orders that already used it keep their discount, and you can create the same code again later.
The list flags codes that aren't working right now: Paused, Expired, Not started or Fully claimed. Next to each code you'll see how many times it's been used, out of the limit if there is one.
If something goes wrong
These appear when you save a code.
"Use 2–24 letters, numbers, dashes or underscores — no spaces." Change the code so it's 2 to 24 characters long, using only those characters.
"A percentage has to be between 1 and 100." Enter a percentage from 1 to 100.
"Enter how much comes off." A Rand off code needs an amount above zero.
"The end date has to be after the start date." Pick an end date later than the start date.
"The code SUMMER20 is already in use." (with your code's name) Another code in this store has that name. Pick a different one, or open the existing code and change it.
These are the messages customers can see at checkout.
"We don't have a code called SUMMER20." The code doesn't exist, or was deleted. Check the spelling on the Discounts page.
"SUMMER20 is no longer available." The code is paused.
"SUMMER20 hasn't started yet." or "SUMMER20 has expired." Today is outside the Runs from dates.
"SUMMER20 has been fully claimed." It has reached its Total uses. Raise the limit if you want more people to use it.
"Spend R50.00 more to use SUMMER20." (with the real amount) The basket is under the Minimum spend.
"You have already used SUMMER20." That email address has reached the Uses per customer limit.
