How to Sell on Instagram in South Africa in 2026

Instagram Shops and in-app checkout aren't available in South Africa, so the sale has to happen somewhere else. Here's how to turn followers into paid orders without living in your DMs.

Instagram is where a lot of South African small brands get found. But if you've tried to set up Instagram Shopping here, you'll know the catch: Meta stopped supporting Facebook and Instagram Shops for South Africa in August 2023, and in-app checkout isn't available here.

So Instagram finds you the customer, and the sale has to happen somewhere you control. Here's how to set that up properly.

Why "DM to order" doesn't scale

"DM for price" feels personal, and it works for your first ten orders. Then it doesn't:

  • Customers leave rather than wait for a reply.
  • You lose track of who paid and who's "going to pay later".
  • Every sale costs you ten minutes of messages.

The fix is a shop link people can buy from without talking to you.

Step 1: Put a shop link in your bio

Your bio link is the one clickable link on your profile. Make it your shop, not a link-list page with six buttons. Every extra tap loses buyers.

A link straight to a product works even better in a story or a reel caption, where people can't tap links in normal posts.

Step 2: Make the shop match the feed

When someone taps through, they should feel they're in the same place. Same photos, same colours, same tone. If your feed is moody and your shop is bright white, people hesitate.

Step 3: Make paying easy

Offer the ways South Africans actually pay: cards, Instant EFT or pay by bank, and Capitec Pay. Someone who saw you on their phone at 10pm wants to pay on that phone, right then. See Card, EFT or pay by bank.

Step 4: Post things people can buy

  • One product per post beats a flat-lay of twelve. Say the price.
  • Show it in use. A candle burning, a dress moving, a cake being cut.
  • Reels for reach, posts for detail, stories for urgency. "Only 3 left" works in a story.
  • Say what to do next: "Link in bio, ships tomorrow."

Step 5: Move the conversation to WhatsApp

Questions still come. Answering on WhatsApp, with a link to the exact product, turns a question into an order. Most South Africans would rather WhatsApp than email.

Step 6: Know what's working

Tag your bio link and story links so you can see which ones bring visits and sales. In ShopEazy, the Grow area shows how many visits each channel brings, and on Growth, the orders and sales too, so you can see whether Instagram is earning its time.

Mistakes we see a lot

  • Hiding the price. People who have to ask often don't.
  • A bio link that goes to your homepage when you're promoting one product.
  • Buying followers. They don't buy anything, and they drag down your reach.
  • Posting and leaving. Reply to comments in the first hour.
